Chlorella and spirulina have taken the supplement world by storm, and for a good reason, these green algae are definite superfoods. Even though these may not have been commonly known five years ago, they both have been gaining popularity. With their similarities comes the constant debate on which one is better than the other, but in our opinion, there is room in your diet for both, and they actually complement each other nicely. This article will help break down the similarities and differences between the two, as well as give you a nutrient-packed smoothie recipe that marries both super greens.
Chlorella vs. Spirulina
Both of these green algae have similar nutritional profiles; there are some distinct differences between the two. While their protein, carbohydrate, and fat compositions are very similar, their most notable nutritional differences lie in their calorie, vitamin, and mineral contents.
Chlorella is higher in:
- calories
- omega-3 fatty acids
- provitamin A
- riboflavin
- magnesium
- iron
- zinc
Spirulina is lower in calories but still contains a high amount of:
- riboflavin
- thiamine
- iron
- copper
Both of these algae also contain high levels of Omega Fatty Acids. While chlorella contains higher levels of Omega3 fatty acids, spirulina contains higher levels of Omega 6 Fatty Acids. Both of these are essential for brain and cell growth.
In addition to their high levels of polyunsaturated fat, both chlorella and spirulina are very high in antioxidants.
These are compounds that interact with and neutralize free radicals in your body to prevent damage to cells and tissues.
Both Spirulina and Chlorella contain high levels of protein which is why the Aztecs used them as a food source, and NASA uses them as a dietary supplement for their astronauts during long missions.
Bottom Line:
Both of the super green algae are great on their own and have amazing benefits for your health. They can also be combined to be even more beneficial (and even prettier) in this amazing detoxifying Smoothie. We can't wait to hear how much you love this in the comments below!
